On the same day my wife & I got the election results we expected, which were crushing & so disappointing, our vet called to tell us our youngest fur baby is terminally ill.

Oswin Pinky Pie Pond. Baby Monkey. The Monk. The Chupacabre. Baby chupie. Our baby. I cannot express the amount of soul crushing sadness we are experiencing right now.

Her sister has been very ill for a while now, so we made the decision to let them go. Together. Tomorrow.

Her sister was THAT dog for me & watching her decline has been so hard. She was the Jake to my Finn. She quite literally saved me from one of the darkest moments in my life. Leela Boo Bug. Baby dog. Old dog.

She hated dancing, loved walks & soaking up sunshine. I called her my "Krypto". We've had the best adventures. She made it to 17. But now, she can barely walk & she sleeps all the time & she hurts. She's down to about 15 lbs from her normal 23. The vet said she was declining & her liver numbers sbowed her liver was beginning to malfunction. I have already been mourning her for a year.

Oswin was always so happy she had a sister. I'm happy Leela made it to be with her in the end.

I don't exactly know how we are going to get through this, but everyone says it's the right thing to do.

It doesn't feel like it. And I guess I'm sharing this experience in the hopes it will help someone else. It's an impossible decision when one of them is bounding around & seems healthy. But she isn't. They gave her 2 weeks & said the decline will be rapid.

We have been sobbing on & off for 3 days now.

They are the bestest girls.

My heart is shattered.

But we made them a promise. We'd never leave them & we'd always be there for them & do what was best.

The best feels awful.

i do have to wonder how much of tfone megatron's mentality during the civil war is going to be just him falling victim to the sunk cost fallacy.

how much of everything that he does is going to be him thinking "it has to be worth it. everything that i'm doing, it has to be worth it" because he's already lost too much to ever go back.

he has to commit because there's nothing left for him to return to.

because he told sentinel he had nothing left to lose and he was wrong and it was because of sentinel that he lost the person he cared the most about in the world. so it has to be worth it. losing orion to kill sentinel has to be worth it.

While I get the intitial surprise and shock that Berenice and her cousin were sharing a sugar daddy and might or might not have engaged in certain activities together with Sterling... I am honestly kind of over all those 'sweet home Alabama' jokes or people just pointing out the incest and nothing else.

Like, yeah. Ok. We all read the chapter. Can we move on from that now? Can we talk about anything else, like maybe what the incestuous element added could mean for Berenice's character and backstory, what it might say about her relationships in life? Were Egaeus and Berenice already in that kind of relationship, or did they only play into it to please Sterling? So many interesting elements to be discussed from this chapter and the revelation of Berenice's life, all shoven aside only for a hundred same bare-bones exclamations of 'they were COUSINS???' and then followed by 'OH but at that time it was seen as normal!'

I'm just. kind of frustrated the mere presence of it is such a big deal I guess? It honestly doesn't come as that much of a surprise because well - it's gothic literature, as the webtoon has clearly established itself. Also, the character is based on 'Berenice' where they are indeed cousins engaged to be married. I would have been more surprised if Egaeus suddenly wasn't Berenice's cousin.

And I just don't see the point on dwelling on it so much for just being there or 'justifying' why it would be there by bringing up how it was different at that time, I guess. It felt, honestly, a little like some kind of moral panic, or more like, a lot of gesturing to make sure people wouldn't think you'd endorse the incestual aspect, even though it honestly isn't necessary because we all already know incest is bad and the story never made it seem like it would endorse it. Also, gothic fiction always had stuff like this, and I would love for people to finally move past the stage of just talking about how it's there and instead start talking about why - story-wise, character-wise - it would be there and what it means or could mean.

thinking about orvs metatextual engagement with its genre and specifically how that interacts with its women again. kim dokja is a self insert for the reader - what he thinks is largely meant to represent what we think, especially in the beginning before sing shong really fleshes out his character. kim dokja sees the world through tropes, directly acknowledging the genre around him and the cliches we expect e.g. the overpowered mc, the scheming villain, the beautiful heroine.

but a major part of his arc is deconstructing this reductionist view of the world in a way that parallels the author's deconstruction of the genre, and that plays really well with the way orv writes women. yoo sangah is perhaps the best exanple - shes introduced as the heroine, a one-dimensional pretty girl who in any other novel would become kim dokja's love interest. but the authors allow her to be her own character, directly challenging the stereotype of the heroine and calling attention to the genre's typical lack of depth for such a character. i think this undercurrent plays in the background often but really comes to the forefront when yoo sangah reminds kim dokja of her putting pepper in their bosses' coffee, a memory kim dokja had supressed because it didn't fit with the pretty girl persona he made for her.

i interpret that moment as yoo sangah pushing her way out of the mold of heroine often found in these stories, demanding a depth be added to her character, asking kim dokja - and thus the reader - to see her in her entirety, to see the heroine archetype for what she could be. orv is at all times in conversation with its genre, and its simultaneous writing of female characters with agency and depth and acknowledgement of the tropes these women are expected to fulfill is undeniably a part of that. and its a part i enjoy. most of the time.
